Standard Textile, a leading provider of healthcare textiles, recently participated in a groundbreaking workshop hosted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. As industry leaders in reusable medical textiles, the company was invited to share their expertise on the complete eco-system of reusable PPE, highlighting the challenges and opportunities that exist in the healthcare sector.
The workshop, titled “Reusable Health Care Textiles for Personal Protective Equipment,” brought together experts to address healthcare waste and explore sustainable solutions. The healthcare industry faces significant challenges in managing waste from disposable PPE, contributing substantially to local waste streams. The workshop aimed to identify opportunities to increase the use of reusable healthcare textiles as a sustainable alternative.
John Wintz, Group Vice President at Standard Textile, emphasized the importance of this initiative:
“This workshop is vital for addressing the pressing challenges in healthcare waste management. By bringing together experts from diverse fields, we are highlighting the critical role of reusable PPE in promoting sustainability and safety within the industry.”

Wintz further commented on the potential impact:
“Utilizing more reusables in healthcare is good for today, tomorrow and for all future generations. The NAS workshop laid the groundwork for smart policies that will drive this change.”
The diverse group of participants provided a comprehensive view of the challenges and opportunities in transitioning to reusable PPE. Their expertise is expected to inform future policy decisions and industry practices.
As the National Academies prepare to release a detailed report, stakeholders across the healthcare industry are anticipating valuable insights that could lead to significant changes in PPE practices. Standard Textile remains committed to advancing sustainable solutions in healthcare textiles and looks forward to contributing to this ongoing conversation.
