April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day dedicated to education about environmental issues. Today, it’s a global initiative dedicated to awareness and action.
One way to promote action is by focusing on the three Rs (3Rs) – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The 3Rs is the guide recommended to lead a sustainable life. Followed in order and making changes in each area can help drive sustainable change. The 3Rs principle helps avoid and reduce the amount of waste we throw out.
At Standard Textile, our processes are focused on following the 3Rs and minimizing our environmental impact. Materials are recycled and reused throughout our manufacturing processes. Waste fibers and fabrics created by trimming, cutting and sewing, and miscellaneous manufacturing operations are recycled. Paper, cardboard and plastic associated with production and packaging are also recycled. We are dedicated to reducing waste by minimizing and eliminating unnecessary packaging and using post-consumer materials whenever possible.
When it comes to our products, we pride ourselves on reuse. Whether it’s sheeting, towels, patient or surgical gowns, Standard Textile products are made with the highest quality materials to promote and encourage reuse.
According to the EPA, an estimated 1.5 million tons of towels, sheets and pillowcases are generated annually around the world, but the export or recycling of these textiles amounts to 240,000 tons (a 16.3% recycling rate). In addition to saving money, recycling or reusing this material as much as possible has significant environmental benefits.
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, we will continue to focus on reuse and the positive impact it has on the environment when compared to disposables. We hope you’ll also think about ways to reduce, reuse and recycle at home and at work.
