Sustainability Trends in Hospitality

Sustainability is more than just a trend in hospitality, it’s a necessity. According to a 2024 report, 75% of travelers plan to travel more sustainably over the next year, and 57% want to reduce their energy consumption on upcoming trips. Travelers are increasingly seeking eco-friendly options and responsible tourism practices that minimize harm to destinations and communities.

To explore how hotels can make a real impact, we spoke with Pierre Bee, a seasoned industry expert with over 20 years in hospitality and 15 years at Standard Textile. As a passionate advocate for sustainable practices, Pierre has helped countless customers achieve their environmental goals through innovative textile solutions and waste reduction strategies.

In this Q&A, he shares insights on the latest sustainability trends, the role of responsible sourcing, and how hotels can balance guest comfort with environmental responsibility.

What are the biggest sustainability trends currently shaping the hospitality industry, and how is Standard Textile adapting to them?

Pierre: The hospitality industry is prioritizing waste reduction, water and energy conservation, and sustainable sourcing. At Standard Textile, we’re innovating with products like Centium Core Technology® to extend product life and reduce resource consumption, as well as programs like Take-Back Recycling to repurpose linens at the end of their life cycle.

Hotels are under pressure to reduce their environmental impact while maintaining high-quality guest experiences. How can they achieve both?

Pierre: Sustainable solutions don’t have to come at the expense of guest comfort. For example, our Elevations™ and Gradient® collections optimize drying efficiency while maintaining a luxurious feel. By choosing long-lasting, responsibly sourced textiles, hotels can enhance both sustainability and guest satisfaction.

Sustainability certifications like LEED and BREEAM are becoming industry standards. How does Standard Textile help hotels meet these goals?

Pierre: We support hotels by offering products made from sustainable materials like BCI-certified cotton and by reducing waste and energy use in our manufacturing processes. Our team also works closely with hotel partners to align with their sustainability initiatives and certification requirements.

Textile waste is a major issue in hospitality. How can properties address this challenge?

Pierre: Through our Take-Back Recycling Program, we provide a sustainable solution for hotels to recycle used linens that can no longer be donated. This program has already diverted thousands of pounds of textiles from landfills, giving them a second life through repurposing.

What emerging technologies are helping hotels reduce water and energy consumption, and how does Standard Textile incorporate these innovations?

Pierre: Innovations like moisture-wicking fabrics, targeted drying technology, and energy-efficient laundering processes are making a difference. For example, our Room Ready For You® program ensures textiles arrive laundered, reducing water and energy use before they even reach the hotel.

Sustainability isn’t just about products; it’s also about people. How can hotels engage their guests and staff in sustainability initiatives?

Pierre: Transparency and education are key. Hotels can highlight their sustainability efforts through in-room messaging, staff training, and guest engagement programs. At Standard Textile, we partner with hotels to provide sustainable solutions that they can promote to their guests, reinforcing their commitment to a greener future.
